Greengages or Green Plum now is available at Pars Market

Another awesome seasonal fruit for Spring time is now here at Pars Market Because Its the time of the year yet again when all kinds of exotic Iranian fruits are beginning to show up in abundance. The local calls it 'nobaraneh'...indulging in their favorite fruits of the early season.

Gojeh sabz, or unripened greengages or Green Plums, (in Arabic: Jenerick and Turkish: Erik) are as popular in Iran as, let’s say, strawberries are in the USA.

Most commonly Iranians wash them and sprinkle them with salt to enjoy as a cheek-suckingly sharp snack. They look forward with child-like glee to the first gojeh of spring, and scrabble to get their fill.

The sour cherry plum...Goje sabz, literally translated as green tomato or sour green plums, is said to grow mainly in the mountain areas of Iran. Karaj, in the western part of Tehran is also considered as one of the main growing and producing areas. This self fertile round green plums is often picked before it is fully ripe and eaten fresh or cooked by itself or with sour cherries. The local usually eat them sprinkled and spiced with salt and hence are made into 'goje sabz,' a popular pastime indulgence especially among the ladies.

This yellow-fleshed fruit is juicy and very rich in flavor. A honeyed taste explosion occurs when you bite into one. They are beautiful to observe as they turn from greenish-yellow to golden yellow and, finally, when fully ripe, a rose blush appears on the surface of the fruit.

Gojeh sabz should be in season at Pars Market for another couple of weeks or so...
