What is Kava? The Benefits of Kava Explained

What is Kava?

Kava is a tall shrub that grows in the islands of the Pacific Ocean. This shrub produces large, green, heart-shaped leaves that grow thickly on the branches. Long, slender flowers grow where the branches meet the stems. The roots look like bundles of woody, hairy branches. The root is the part of the plant used medicinally.

The main active ingredients in kava root are called kavalactones (kavapyrones). These chemicals (including kawain, dihydrokawain, and methysticum) have been extensively studied in laboratory and animal studies. They have been found to reduce convulsions, promote sleep, and relax muscles in animals. It has also been reported to produce effects of euphoria and mild intoxication at higher doses/

Kava can be taken as a drink or as a supplement or extract. Traditionally the root is crushed, ground or powdered and soaked in water to be drunk as a tea. This tea is often consumed socially and as part of traditional ceremonies and cultural practices throughout the South Pacific Islands. Kava can also be taken as a capsule or in extract shots.

How Much Kava Should I Take?

Experts recommend that your daily intake of kavalactones does not exceed 250mg.

An effective dose of kavalactones is 70-250mg.

For example, if one capsule contains 100 mg of kava root extract and is standardized to contain 30% kavalactones, it will contain 30mg of kavalactones (100mg x .30 =30mg)

To reach an effective dose within the range of 70-250 mg of kavalactones, you would need to take at least three capsules of this particular supplement.

Most extracts of kava root contain 30-70% kavalactones.

What are the side effects of kava?

Kava is possibly safe when taken for up to 6 months. Using kava can make it difficult to drive or operate machinery safely. Do not take kava before you plan on driving. "Driving-under-the-influence" citations have been issued to people driving erratically after drinking large amounts of kava tea.

People might have heard that using kava can cause liver damage. This seems to be rare and is most often linked to long-term use of very high doses. Most people who have used kava haven't experienced liver toxicity. Also, past cases of liver toxicity might not be due to kava. Other factors may have contributed to these toxic effects.  Certain countries have lifted kava restrictions as more information about kava's interaction has been researched.  Still, talk to your doctor if you are taking any medications that may interact with kava or if you have any new symptoms arise.
